Sunderland won its first Premier League game in 27 attempts Sunday, beating Middlesbrough 2-0.

Tommy Miller put Sunderland ahead in the second minute and Julio Arca added the other with a free kick after an hour. Sunderland was promoted after two seasons in the Football League Championship. Its previous Premier League win was Dec. 15, 2002.

Sunderland had lost five and tied one of its previous Premier League games this season. It had been the only team not to have won this season.

"I've waited seven games and I'm very, very pleased," Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy said. "But I think we deserved it, we've earned the victory and I can't speak highly enough of the players. It gives us belief."

Chelsea leads the Premier League after winning its seventh straight game Saturday, a 2-1 win over Aston Villa. The win gave Chelsea 21 points. United lost 2-1 to visiting Blackburn, Arsenal tied 0-0 at promoted West Ham and Liverpool scrambled to a 2-2 tie at Birmingham.

Chelsea is 11 points ahead of Arsenal, 10 ahead of United and 14 ahead of Liverpool.
