Anelka to start with Henry as France takes on Costa Rica (Reuters) Updated: 2005-11-08 09:18
PART OF STRATEGY
Henry, with 30 goals from 73 caps, has scored five times for Arsenal since
returning from injury three weeks ago.
Liverpool's Djibril Cisse has also performed well in Trezeguet's absence,
netting twice against the Faroe Islands and scoring a crucial equaliser against
Switzerland.
Domenech insists Anelka can be part of his strategy.
"He is fast and gifted and he always tries to go forward," the coach said.
"He is also capable of keeping the ball when it's needed. He could be a great
help for other players."
The former Paris St Germain, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Manchester City player
is probably more surprised than anybody at the recall after saying earlier this
year he did not expect a place in the squad while Domenech was in charge.
"Even when there are dozens of guys injured, Domenech doesn't pick me," said
Anelka, who last played for France in a goalless draw with Russia in April 2002.
Anelka won his first cap in a World Cup warmup in April 1998 under Aime
Jacquet and was left out of the squad for that year's triumphant campaign on
home soil, despite helping Arsenal to a league and FA Cup double just weeks
before.
Under Roger Lemerre, he played in France's successful Euro 2000 campaign but
missed the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan where France were knocked out
after the group stages.
Santini snubbed him after his refusal to play against Yugoslavia in November
2002 and he missed Euro 2004 in Portugal.
