Two Afghan police officers killed in blast

At least two police officers were killed in a blast that ripped through a district police headquarters in eastern Afghanistan on Thursday, police said.

The cause of the blast was not known. It happened at the police headquarters in Khogyani district of Nangarhar province, an area where Taliban insurgents and their Islamist militant aliies are active.

The two victims were both police officers, said Khalilullah Ziaye, the provincial police chief.

He did not say who was suspected to be behind the incident.

More than 1,100 people, mostly militants but also nearly 60 U.S. soldiers, have died in the Taliban insurgency this year in Afghanistan, the bloodiest period since U.S.-led forces overthrew the Taliban's government in 2001.
