Chinese and Russian researchers collect water samples
from Songhua River in Jiamusi, northeast China's Heilongjiang province
December 8, 2005. By Thursday morning, the front of the contaminated water
arrived at urban Jiamusi, according to the Heilongjiang Provincial
Environment Protection Bureau. A slick of toxic benzene spilled into
the Songhua River after a November 13 chemical plant explosion,
causing cities along the river to shut down water supply. [newsphoto]
