A suicide car bomb struck a US military unit in western Baghdad, killing a US soldier and wounding 11 others, the US military said on Saturday.

"A Task Force Baghdad Soldier was killed when a suicide car bomber attacked a unit operating in the Abu Ghraib district of west Baghdad December 9," the military said in a statement.

The attack also wounded 11 other soldiers and one Iraqi civilian, it said.

The name of the killed soldier is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, it added.

The death toll has brought to more than 2,130 the number of US military personnel who have died in Iraq since the US-led invasion in March 2003, according to media reports.
