Gas explosion kills 11 in SW. China city

A gas explosion occurred at a road construction site in Dujiangyan City, southwest China's Sichuan Province on Thursday killed 11 workers, injured 11 others, according to the provincial work safety watchdog.

The accident happened at about 2:00 p.m. in a tunnel, from which the highway under construction between Dujiangyan and Wenchuan cities in the province run through. The exact number of casualties is under further investigation.

Vice governor Yang Zhiwen has led a team of local safety supervision officials to the spot. Intensive investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
