An express train traveling through strong winter winds derailed in northern Japan, killing four people and injuring more than 30, officials said Monday.

All six cars of the train derailed Sunday evening, and three of the cars toppled onto their sides in Yamagata prefecture (state), about 180 miles north of Tokyo, train operator JR East Co. said.

The injuries of the survivors did not appear to be life-threatening, Yamagata police spokesman Yoshikatsu Oe said. It was unclear how many passengers were on the train, but Oe said most of the injured were in the first two cars.

The police spokesman said all four passengers who died were in the first car which buckled in the crash.

Transport Ministry official Ryotaro Miyamoto said the cause of the accident was not immediately known.

The president of JR East, Mutsutake Otsuka, apologized for the accident at a news conference Monday and promised an investigation.
