President Hu delivers New Year address

Long-term prosperity, stability of HK, Macao

Chinese President Hu Jintao pledged that the central government will firmly safeguard the long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and Macao.

"We will adhere to the policies of 'one country, two systems', 'Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong', 'Macao people governing Macao' and a high degree of autonomy," Hu said in his New Year Address.

He said the central authorities will support the governments and chief executives of Hong Kong and Macao to administer by law and expand the exchanges and cooperation between the mainland and the two special administrative regions.

Adherence to one China principle on Taiwan issue

Chinese President Hu Jintao vowed adherence to the one China principle on the Taiwan issue and perseverance in pushing for peaceful reunification of China in his New Year Address.

"We will adhere to the fundamental policy of 'peaceful reunification and one country, two systems,' never waver on adhering to the one China principle, never give up efforts on promoting peaceful reunification, never change the policy of pinning hope on Taiwan people and never compromise on opposing 'Taiwan independence' secessionist activities", he said.

The Chinese mainland will actively promote exchanges and cooperation on both sides of the Taiwan Straits, safeguard peace and stability across the Straits and push ahead with the great cause of peaceful reunification, he said.
