Despres finished 3min 41sec ahead of Spaniard Marc Coma and 5min 18sec in front of Isidre Esteve Pujol of Spain, both also riding a KTM.

Coma had his lead in the overall standings cut to 1min 25sec with Despres jumping into second place ahead of Esteve Pujol who is 6min 28sec behind.

Thursday's 792km sixth stage is from Tan Tan to Zouerat in Mauritania, which has a 444km timed section.
