Hingis beaten in comeback tournament

Llagostera Vives said she felt Hingis could come back to the top level, depending on her ability to stay fit.

"She's done everything in tennis so I don't see why she can't do it again, but it's too early to say because you never know what can happen," Llagostera Vives said.

Hingis also plans to play in next week's Sydney International on a wild card entry and the Australian Open at Melbourne beginning January 16, a tournament she has won three times.

Hingis will next play fourth-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy in the semifinals. Pennetta beat fifth-seeded Tatiana Golovin of France -- Hingis' doubles partner here -- 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 yesterday.

In another match yesterday, third-seeded Dinara Safina of Russia beat Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain 6-1, 6-3. Safina will play Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic, who stunned Swiss top seed Patty Schnyder 6-4, 6-3.
