Schumacher drops hints on quitting (AP) Updated: 2006-01-09 09:55 Michael Schumacher threatened
to end his Formula One career if he can't win with Ferrari.
The seven-time world champion had a poor last season. Germany's Der Spiegel
magazine quoted him as saying he may quit if the Italian team can't build a
winning car.
"The car has to be competitive," Schumacher said. "If I don't have the chance
to win races and fight for the title, I don't believe I have a lot of desire to
continue my career."
The 37-year-old German will make a decision by the middle of next season,
which starts on March 12 in Bahrain. His contract with Ferrari runs out at the
end of the season.
Schumacher won five straight titles with Ferrari before finishing third last
season behind Renault's Fernando Alonso. His only win in a campaign he called
"cursed" was at the United States Grand Prix, when half the field didn't start
because of tire problems.
"If we want progress, we need more people. In Formula One, you can't afford
to stand still," he said. "I want to know: Where are we going at Ferrari?"
