But Tatiara Council chairman John Ross, which covers Caldecott's home town of Keith, south-east of Adelaide, said he remained a person everyone liked and a great role model.

"He was very easygoing, very humble and always ready to go out of his way to help anybody," Ross said.

"Andy has certainly become one of Tatiara's favourite sons, he was almost an idol in Keith."

Ross said it was almost certain the council would organise an appropriate tribute to Caldecott.

In the meantime he said the council's flag would fly at half-mast on Tuesday.

"It will be just a mark of our respect for Andy who died really representing our district and our country in an event that only the best can take part in," Ross said.

Tributes for Caldecott were posted on various websites associated with the motorcycling community.

David Manley from the US said he had watched Caldecott's skills grow over the years.

"He was the most humble and greatest ambassador for the sport, Keith and Australia," Mr Manley said.

"There is no greater tribute than the thousands of hardened men around the world with tears in their eyes at the news of Andy's passing."
