Spring Festival transport peak looming in south China city (Xinhua) Updated: 2006-01-10 16:09
The railway station in this bustling metropolis in south China has already
seen a transport peak ahead of the Spring Festival, which falls on January 29
this year.
Last Friday alone, the Guangzhou Railway Station handled more than 74,000
passengers, which surpassed the volume for the New Year's Day, reported
Tuesday's China Youth Daily.
Guangzhou is home to large numbers of migrant workers, many from densely
populated and underdeveloped provinces. They return home for family reunion
during the Spring Festival.
Railway departments along major railways have been working to meet the
challenge of the heavy passenger flow as the festival comes earlier this year
than in the past few years.
To honor the promise of better services, the Guangzhou Railway Station has
increased the number of waiting rooms from seven to ten, with combined areas
rising to 4,500 square meters.
