Taiwan Authorities urged to loosen cross-Straits economic ties (Xinhua) Updated: 2006-02-08 09:09
Business people in Taiwan have demanded the authorities to reduce
restrictions on investment in the Chinese mainland, allow mainland tourists to
visit the island, and realize direct air, trade and postal links, according to
Taiwan-based media.
Recently, Taiwan media carried lots of news that many Taiwan investors have
showed more interest in the mainland by successively increasing their investment
in mainland businesses.
Meanwhile, Taiwan investors have showed great interest in the mainland's
stock market, especially the A-shares which used to be only available for
mainland investors.
The mainland has allowed the people to tour in the other side of the Taiwan
Straits, but the Taiwan authorities have declined to lift the ban on mainland
tourists, though Taiwan airlines and local businesses have been preparing for
receiving tourists from the mainland.
At a recent workshop held in Taiwan, some local business people showed their
discontent on the policies of the Taiwan authorities to tighten control over
cross-Straits economic exchanges and trade, according to local media.
