The following is the biographical sketch of Ding Shisun, who was just elected vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC):

Male, born in 1927, of Han nationality, native of Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province.

Member of China Democratic League (CDL), member of Communist Party of China.

Started to work in 1950, graduated from Mathematics Department of Qinghua University, professor.

Student of Shanghai Datong University in 1944-1947, of Mathematics Department of Qinghua University in 1948-1950; assistant at Mathematics Department of Qinghua University in 1950- 1952; assistant, lecturer, professor, deputy director and director of Mathematics Department of Beijing University in 1952-1984; president and professor of Beijing University in 1984-1988.

Vice-chairman of CDL Central Committee in 1988-1989, president and professor of Beijing University in 1988-1989; vice-chairman of CDL Central Committee, member of State Council's Academy Degrees Committee, vice-president of Chinese Education Association for International Exchanges, executive president of Western Returned Students' Association, and deputy leader of Mathematical Examination and Appraisal Group under National Natural Science Foundation Committee in 1989-1996; chairman of CDL Central Committee 1996-1998.

Member of National Committee of 7th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Standing Committee member of 8th CPPCC National Committee, vice-chairman of Education and Culture Committee of CPPCC National Committee.

Vice-chairman of 9th NPC Standing Committee.
