The 4th High-Tech Expo (then known as High-Tech Week) in 2001 made a great leap by expanding its exhibition area to accommodate more exhibitors and visitors.
Larger, more comprehensive expo
The expo, having grown significantly in terms of exhibition space over the previous three years, covered 23 exhibition halls with a floor area of 100,000 square meters -- four times that of 2000.
The show featured the achievements of key technical research projects during the nation's Ninth Five-year Plan (1996-2000), electronic communications development, Internet and broadband applications, biological medicine, energy and environmental protection, modern agriculture, aeronautical and aerospace technology, technical publications and information media. A total 2,138 high-tech companies and organizations participated in various shows.
Fruitful week
The event was received enthusiastically both at home and abroad, attracting some 530,000 visitors. Among them were over 70 government delegations and trade missions from more than 50 countries and regions, and over 2,000 foreign visitors from chambers of commerce, investment companies, banks and financial institutions.
According to initial statistics, the event produced 823 agreements worth US$7.922 billion, up 31.52 percent over last year. From this figure 93.6 percent was investment (US$7.418 billion), where foreign investment accounted for 84.73 percent (US$6.285 billion).
Investments in high-tech projects were valued at US$4.074 billion (54.92 percent of the total amount invested). Beijing netted 147 projects during the week while other Chinese regions scored 676 projects.
