Catkin quandary could be quashed The annual annoyance of poplar catkins clogging up the spring air in Beijing could become a thing of the past, Guangming Daily reports. By 2007, all the old poplars, most of them female ones which produce many catkins, will be replaced by a new generation of trees, according to the local forestry authority. About 500,000 such poplars have already been replaced.
