Mt. Yuelu Situated in the west bank of the Xiangjiang River, Mt. Yuelu is one of the most famous scenic areas in Hunan Province. Stretching for over 10 kilometers with an altitude of 300.8 meters, this mountain, resembling a natural barrier, lay to the west of the Changsha City. The soul of Mt. Yuelu lies in its mountains. Densely covered with old trees, those precipitous peaks undulate with the trees on them reaching into the sky. There are about 977 species of plants, in which some of them are rare even in the world. Mountain springs meander down from the mountaintop, adding more tranquility here. Yuelu Academy is located at the east foot of the mountain, being one of the oldest academies in China. It was established in the 976 during the Song Dynasty with the funds from the government. At its prime period when Zhuxi, a famous neo-confucianist in the Song Dynasty, gave lectures here, its students accounted about 1000. The academy existed through the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, and was transferred to Hunan Institute of Higher. Learning in 1903. After the Revolution of 1911, it became the Hunan Higher Learning Normal School and in 1926, officially named Hunan University. Serving as an institute for 1000 thousand years, Yuelu Academy is honored as a "One-thousand-year-old Academic Institution". |
