It's my birthday and I'll do as I wish
A retired civil servant in Loudi, Hunan Province told his children the big banquet they had planned to celebrate his 90th birthday was off. Instead, the man said, he wished to donate 1,000 yuan (US$120) saved for the occasion to help a nearby poor village with its spring cultivation efforts. The old man, surnamed Chen, is a veteran of the War of Resistance against Japan (1937-45). Knowing that 80 per cent of the villagers were still under the poverty line, Chen wished to sacrifice his own birthday banquet and put the money to a good cause. His children all supported his good deed, the Sanxiang Metropolis Daily reports. |
