Vice Minister of Health Wang Delong made the remarks at a high level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly Thursday.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has warned that the HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to outrun global efforts to contain it.

Annan called for increased resources from governments and the private sector to step up prevention efforts.

He made the appeal in his opening address to a day-long ministerial session of the UN General Assembly, which will assess the UN's progress towards its targets for fighting AIDS.

The meeting brought together health ministers and senior officials from 68 countries as well as ambassadors from other UN member states.
