Chinese woman shot dead in South Africa

A woman from Southeast China was shot to death during a robbery yesterday in a southeastern South African city, marking the second Chinese death in the last two days in the country.

Chen Jianqing, a woman from China's coastal city of Fujian Province, was attacked in her self-owned shop. She died after being shot in her chest.
A man from East China's Shandong Province was also shot to death in the evening of February 4 in a factory in the northern area of South Africa.
The thieves also shot one of Chen's friends in the legs, but the friend was in fairly good condition after receiving treatment at a local hospital.
According to a report by the Xinhua News Agency, the two robbers were of African origin. They grabbed some jewelry and more than 5,000 Rand (currency of South Africa, equivalent to US$819.83) in the shop, before escaping.
Officials from the Chinese consulate general in South Africa and some Chinese later rushed to the site and comforted Chen's friend, vowing to cooperate with local police officers.
It is estimated there are more than 100,000 Chinese people in South Africa, including 60,000 from Fujian.
Recently, violent crimes aimed at Chinese people have seen a surge with most of the dead with most of the dead having their own business in South Africa.
