Single men in the Nanchao Village of Zhuhai are after wives who have bachelor's degrees.
It pays.
Men in the Guangdong Province village who married a woman holding a BA are awarded 3,000 yuan (US$362), according to a village policy launched in 2003.
Now, a recent prize of 1,500 yuan (US$181) was granted to a local young man who married a woman with a lower-level diploma.
Village authorities say the policy is to better the village's population, which is urbanizing its living standards but is still backward in terms of education and its thinking, the Information Times reports.
