Beijing has a bit of a problem with its new and inexperienced drivers: They are mowing down roadside trees.
To make up for the slaughter of the innocents, the city has announced plans to plant more than 8,000 new trees for those taken out by motorists, some 1,000 every year, according to statistics.
Tree species suffering the most carnage include the ginkgo, pagoda and others.
The tree-planting project will be completed by the end of this month as an important preparation for the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, the Beijing Daily reports.
