HOHHOT - At least 10 people have been confirmed dead in a fire that broke out in a dormitory of railway workers in this capital of north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region late Monday night, according to the local fire department.

Firemen brought the fire under control half an hour after it broke out at 10:30 p.m. Monday. Fourteen other workers in the dormitory have been sent to hospital for burnt injuries, including six severely injured, said rescuers.

The workers' dormitory is a rural house rented by the No. 19 subsidiary of the China Railway Group Limited in Saihan District, Hohhot, where the company workers are building a railway tunnel.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
