College, a poverty-stricken family's hope

Sisters Liu Jing (R) and Liu Xinxin (L) help their paralyzed mother get cleaned up at their home in Wangji Village of Tancheng County, East China's Shandong province, on Sunday, June 6, 2010. Their mother became paralyzed 10 years ago after a serious illness, burning through the family's savings. The girls, both top students at school, live on about 60 yuan ($8.79) sent back each week by their father, who has been laboring in the cities as a migrant worker. The girls, well-prepared for the national college entrance exam starting Monday, hope to get into a prestigious university. The annual test is the reigning yardstick of Chinese college admissions.
