Two excavators work overnight to demolish two historic buildings built in 1940s in Guangzhou city, South China's Guangdong province, June 11, 2013. One of the old buildings used be a residence of the famous Cantonese opera artist Xue Juexian (1904-1956). They were labeled as historic in last year's evaluation, with the necessity to be preserved. "It is a great pity to know such building featuring the city's chrematistics were demolished," said Cui Zhimin, a cultural relics expert in Guangdong province. A lot of buildings built during the period of 1911-1949 were toppled down in recent years, witnessing a gradual extinction of Guangzhou's history and culture, said Xue. [Photo/CFP]
