Sonoma in Shanghai

Dan Kosta had flown all the way from California to show off his Kosta Browne wines to China’s grape enthusiasts. His Pinot Noir is so popular in the international market that vintages are reserved years in advance.
We got a taste of Kosta Brown’s famous Pinot Noir from Russian River Valley when it was served with the second course, the Shrimp Diablo. The spicy dish was a step forward from the first course of smoked-sea scallops with minted pea puree, and shared that boldness with Kosta’s Pinot Noir.
Beef still played an important role at dinner, and the third course was fillet mignon, which came with Petite Sirah from Foppiano Vineyards, also on the Russian River Valley. The Valley evokes images of sunset in Sonoma County and the light mist on the Russian River and for the moment at least, we must be content with that.
Some guests were keen to prolong the pleasure and we overheard some regular guests telling the sommeliers that they wanted the Sonoma wines kept for them. Many have their own lockers or cellars at Morton’s where they can store their wine collections.
