The Hong Kong Observatory reported on Tuesday that it had detected trace amounts of radioactive iodine-131 from the air samples that it had collected at the King's Park Meteorological Station since Saturday.
But the observatory said since the amount is negligible, it won't constitute any threat to public health in Hong Kong. The observatory denied it had delayed announcing the findings, explaining that it took time to analyze the samples.
