BEIJING - GM China, the Chinese subsidiary of the US auto manufacturer General Motors, is recalling a number of imported models sold in China due to faulty windshield wiper fluid systems that could lead to engine fires, China's quality watchdog said Friday.

A defect in a heated windshield wiper fluid system could lead to fires in some extreme cases, said the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) in a statement on its official website.

The recall covers various models, including Buick Lucerne, Cadillac DTS, the Hummer H2 made between 2006 and 2009, Cadillac Escalade ESV and EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Acadia, Sierra, Yukon, Yukon XL, Saturn Outlook made from 2007 to 2009, as well as the Chevrolet Traverse made in 2009.

The recall is part of GM's worldwide recall, and GM China promised to disable the heated washer fluid system, said the statement.

The recall for repairs would begin on July 26, but the company did not reveal the number of vehicles involved in the recall.

GM began a similar recall in China early last month, which involved 4,199 imported Cadillac vehicles with the same safety defect.
