BEIJING -- China's stocks closed lower Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.61 percent, or 46.18 points, to close at 2,820.18.
The Shenzhen Component Index lost 1.6 percent, or 200.26 points, to end at 12,336.29.
Combined turnover rose to 334.3 billion yuan ($50.1 billion), a sharp increase from Monday's 260.7 billion yuan.
