CHONGQING - Four coal miners became trapped underground after a gas explosion occurred in a coal mine in Southwest China's Chongqing municipality, local authorities said.

The explosion occurred at 10 am Tuesday in the Banqiaogou Coal Mine, located in Chongqing's Fengjie County. Search and rescue operations are underway, said a county government official.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
