At Auto Guangzhou 2012, BMW is showing the way to the future with BMW EfficientDynamics and BMW ConnectedDrive.
The company began to implement its EfficientDynamics in 2002, a three-phase plan for innovation to reduce fuel consumption and emissions while improving driving dynamics.
The first phase highlights advanced combustion engines. Its rich achievements are showcased at the Guangzhou show.
The second phase, involving hybrid and electric drivetrains, began in 2009 and has now entered into the stage of significant development.
At the Auto Guangzhou 2012, the BMW ActiveHybrid 3 and 5 make their official debuts, joining the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 and X6.
Now with four hybrid models in China, BMW is setting the benchmark in both efficiency and dynamic performance.
The BMW ActiveHybrid 3 is equipped with a 225 kW/306 hp six-cylinder in-line engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and intelligent energy management system.
Combined with its electric motor, it delivers 250 kW/340 hp and 400 Nm of torque, enabling it to go from zero to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds.
Its synchronous electric motor provides a maximum output of 40 kW/55 hp powered by a lithium-ion high-voltage battery that is recharged by a generator when the car is coasting or braking.
It is also able to travel on electricity alone for up to 4 km at top speeds of 60 km/h. In the EU test cycle, the hybrid achieved average fuel consumption of 6.2 liters per 100 km with carbon dioxide emissions of 149 grams/km.
The BMW ActiveHybrid 5 has the same efficiency and dynamics while providing BMW ConnectedDrive equipment and rear seat entertainment for a more business-geared approach.
The BMW i8 Concept is also displayed in Guangzhou. The concept vehicle will start series production along with the BMW i3 in 2013 or 2014.
BMW is the first premium automaker to integrate EfficientDynamics technology across its product line, offering lightweight construction, engine improvements and intelligent energy management systems.
Engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo and 8-speed automatic transmissions can be found in many models. Other widely integrated technologies include brake energy regeneration, auto start/stop engines, electric power steering and Eco Pro Mode.
As a brand with a commitment to "Sheer Driving Pleasure", BMW has undisputed dynamics. The development of hybrid vehicles brings premium automobiles together with ongoing environmental and energy saving trends, ensuring individual mobility and sustainable development.
As a result of its efforts, BMW Group has been ranked as the industry leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes for the last eight years.
