A top male trends magazine has picked 54-year-old actor Zhang Fengyi as its half-naked cover model for this month's issue, which begs the questions: Is old in? The elderly hip?
Zhang is photographed in front of a melting ice sculpture, to suggest the perils of global warming, and looks like an ancient god, aged and ripped, while ice frosts his head and coats his bare torso.
The actor who plays the roles of emperors and peasants in period dramas is fondly being called "Cover Uncle" by some readers of China's Esquire. But others are not buying into the idea that wrinkles are the face of the future.
"This actor has nothing to do with fashion. He should stick to playing the uncle and we will all be happy," sniped one reader on the magazine's fashion blog.
Moving on from antiques to Takeshi Kaneshiro. The famously handsome Chinese-Japanese actor could be a daddy soon, if twits by entertainment blogger Fumo Sanxia are to be believed.
He says a Taiwan producer informed him that Kaneshiro, who married last year, is planning to have the baby in Japan. The actor's management is not responding to the news, but warned Kaneshiro may duck the debut later this month in Beijing of his new movie, K-20.
Barbie Hsu, aka Big S, is known on the mainland as "The Beauty Queen" for her best-selling books on cosmetology. So, it was a bit of a jolt to discover her looking worse for wear after a heavy drinking session in Taipei.
The photograph on Sina showed Big S with her lower lip protruding, as if she was drooling, and her eyes looking into the back of her head. Surely, it must have been some scorned ex who uploaded the candid shot?
Step forward younger sister, Little S, who added a fun caption saying: "It's so much fun drinking with my sister. I love her! I love her talent, her passion and her enthusiasm for wine!"
Big S fans are saying sibling rivalry is to blame and Little S posted the photos to make herself look good at the expense of big sis.
Vicki Zhao is also concerned about bad press and has started tweeting away to convince her loyal public that she is not as bad as she has been made out to be. Good luck on that one.
Zhao is said to be pregnant with a 7-month-old child. She has not confirmed the pregnancy, or even her rumored marriage to mainland property developer Huang Youlong, in Singapore, last year.
She wrote last week: "Many friends called to ask if I was OK. Some of them even invited me out. At first I was so happy, asking them why? Later it turned out they had read gossip saying that I was dumped by my boyfriend and was in a bad mood... I can't stand it! I want to say dirty words, even if I am a moral girl!"
So, which story was correct? If only she could tell us the truh, there would be less speculation.
