Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. Both our cultural and natural heritage are irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. This is embodied in an international treaty called the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by UNESCO in 1972.

China ratified the UNESCO Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1985, becoming a contracting party. On October 29, 1999 China became a member state of the World Heritage Committee. In 1986, China began to identify and nominate sites on its national territory to be considered for inscription on the World Heritage List.

Up to Now, 40 noteworthy Chinese properties were inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritages List. Among which, 29 were inscribed as World Cultural Heritage Sites, while 7 were inscribed as World Natural Heritage Sites, and 4 were inscribed as both Cultural and Natural Heritage Sites.
