Swimsuit trends for 2006 Updated: 2006-05-27 18:44
Brown is beautiful
Swimsuit colors are subtle this season. "We're seeing a lot of
'anti-colors' like chocolate brown and white," says T.J. Maxx's Laura McDowell.
But they're often brightened up with a splash of pink, turquoise, orange or
other eye-popping color.
Be bold if you want
Swimsuit designers aren't dummies. They continue to offer some bright graphic
print designs. "Bright colors always look good with a tan," says Cosmopolitan
magazine fashion director Michelle McCool.
Brazilian swimsuit designer Lenny Niemeyer incorporates tribal prints into
several of her suits. "Ethnic prints are very rich," she says.
"Bling" is out. "Natural" is in.
Bling was meant for fingers, wrists or the neck ¡ª not swimsuits. Rhinestones,
sequins and other glittery embellishments are so last year.
This year's designs are dotted with seashells, wood rings, raffia and other
natural pieces at the strap, bust or halter area. Gold pieces, used sparingly,
add "minimal chic."
Soft fabrics
Go ahead, touch. Many of this season's designs are made of new blends of
Lycra ¡ª soft yet durable, with extra support.
Skirt the issue
Some trendy types disapprovingly associate skirted swimsuits with Grandma.
But top designers offer sophisticated, sassy styles that practically scream
"cool." Face it: They're great cover-ups.
