FIRST STEPS
"When you purchase a pair of high heels, you should buy them
half a size bigger than your size," says Michele Paradise, ex-model and catwalk
coach.
"In very high heels your feet are thrust forward so a slightly bigger shoe
gives you more space for the foot."
PERFECT YOUR STRUT
"Put your heel down first, then your toe in one
smooth, quick movement," says Paradise. "You should walk with your feet
side-by-side, about a pencil's width apart, with your toes pointing straight
ahead.
"Don't cross over your feet as if you were walking on a tightrope, as you
will wobble. Swing your arms alternately for balance and keep your legs
straight. Take smooth, even steps, and shorten your stride."
TACKLING STAIRS
"Turn your body 45 degrees sideways as you walk down
stairs so that your whole foot is on the step," says Paradise. "Point your feet
towards the banister or, even better, get a handsome chap to escort you! Try not
to look down as it looks a bit clumsy."
AVOIDING SORE FEET
You shouldn't stand for more than an hour in very high
heels. Gel inserts such as Scholl's Party Feet are excellent because they are
cooling and soothing, but do take a break every now and then. Take your shoes
off and stretch your feet, pointing and flexing your toes.
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
Walking in high heels is unnatural, so practice is
essential. Paradise says that in the lead-up to a big event, you should put them
on, then forget about them, for at least half an hour every day, and they will
become second-nature to you.
ANYTHING ELSE?
Attitude is the most important thing when it comes to high
heels. If you think fabulous, you'll look fabulous. "The beauty of heels is that
they automatically make you feel slimmer, taller, sexier and more confident.
They lift you both literally and metaphorically," says Paradise.
