Meanwhile the organisers of the 30,000 Orange Prize for fiction admitted that they had to drop Lily from the panel of judges after she failed to turn up to meetings.

Kirsty Lang, chairman of this year's panel, defended Lily as a good choice of judge. She told The Times: "Life got in the way.

"She lost a baby, her boyfriend left her and she was launching a new TV show. She was under a hell of a lot of pressure.

"She found the pressure of judging a major book prize on top of everything else too much."

Miss Lang said Lily had taken part in drawing up the longlist "by phone" and heaped praise on her, dismissing critics who disparaged her as "being snobby and elitist".

She added: "She reads, she writes her own songs. She's a wordsmith."

Lily's bid to become a TV star received a boost after her BBC3 chat show was signed on for a second series.

The pop star received the green light for eight more episodes of her 45-minute programme despite opening to mixed reviews and disappointing ratings figures.
