Hosting the Winter Olympics offers a boost for the winter sports industry in China, but there is still a lack of safety standards in this industry.

Members of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) suggested tightening market access for the winter sports industry to ensure people's health and safety.

Zhai Zhihai, a National People’s Congress (NPC) delegate, pointed out that the standards implemented by skating and ski resorts were not sufficient enough, and more often than not each resort has its own standards. Thus he proposed a unified and mandatory standard for protective facilities in skating and skiing resorts.

Han Yuchen, n NPC delegate, has placed his focus on staff training. He noted that the construction of skating and skiing resorts outpaced the training of qualified practitioners. There is also an obvious lack of basic guidance or level assessment to skaters, especially novices, which is a great potential threat to both skatersthemselves and others.

The recent skating fever in China buried some loopholes in this industry. However, only “a safe environment ensures long-term and stable development of a sport”, said Guo Naishuo, a NPC delegate.

The China Ski Association recently revised management standards for China's skiing and skating resorts, providing more detailed requests on resort managers, the resort itself and its attendees.

The new standards will be introduced as the industry focuses on leading the safe operation of winter sports venues this winter. Safety inspections are also in dire need to guarantee an effective implementation of the new standards.
