The launch ceremony for Jilin provincial Science and Technology Week was held on Aug 23 at Changchun University of Chinese Medicine in Changchun -- capital city of Northeast China's Jilin province -- according to local media reports.

Focusing on displaying the province's science and tech achievements -- and showcasing the crucial role science and innovation has played in combating the novel coronavirus epidemic -- the one-week-long event is part of National Science and Technology Week.

The themes for this year's science week are combating COVID-19 with science and innovation, the latest scientific breakthroughs in frontier sciences, building a more prosperous society and poverty alleviation via science and technology, according to Jilin officials.

The main venue of the event has been divided into four innovation achievement exhibition areas -- the province's science and technological successes in combating COVID-19, Jilin's sci-tech innovation "10 main projects", Jilin's success in helping poverty alleviation and a special exhibition area for science education and popularization.

In addition, scientific outreach and education "caravans" and public science and technology resources in the province are open free to adolescents and general public and science popularization competitions will also take place.

During the week, the Jilin Provincial Department of Science and Technology is also holding science popularization activities, with famous experts to launch a series of online and offline special science popularization reports and lectures.
