Bamboo plaiting in Huizhou

Huizhou Bamboo Plaiting was born during the Tang and Song Dynasties and thrived in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Most of them handed down from Ming or Qing are bowls, cups, plates and vases, some of which were made with sophisticated methods and exhibited in the Anhui Provincial Museum.

In recent years, the plaiting industry evolved from traditional paterns such as square, round, long or flat into plaited paintings, bamboo carvings, plaited figures and plaited animals. The mountains, rivers, flowers and animals depicted in these pieces are sophisticated in shape.

Craftsmen have to divide bamboo pieces less than one inch wide into 10 to 140 strips, which are as soft as silk and as thin as hair. Moreover, techniques like gold stamping, appliqué, dying, bleaching, mildew-proofing and moth-proofing were also introduced into this art.

Besides its natural bamboo color and basic black, colors of plaited articles can vary from red, yellow and green to blue and purple. Because of the different plaiting skills of local artists, Huizhou Bamboo Plaited pieces offer a versatile look.

Huangshan District is rich in a variety of high-quality bamboo, which contributes to the development of the bamboo plaiting industry.
