Updated: 2012-11-21

Zhang Jie, a professor of geophysics at Anhui-based University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), shared an international award for exploration with Zhu Xianhuai from the US energy giant ConocoPhillips.

The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) recently published a list of scientists who won the annual Reginald Fessenden Award. According to the list, Professor Zhang and Dr Zhu jointly received credit for "their outstanding joint contributions to the development of seismic tomographic solutions to the problem of accurate imaging with complex near-surface geology".

Zhang is the first Chinese to win the award, which was established in 1960 and recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the science and profession of geophysics.

To date, 60 scientists around the world have received the Reginald Fessenden Award.
