Chen Datong received his bachelor's degree, master's degree and doctorate from Peking University. He then engaged in post-doctoral study at the University of Illinois and Stanford University.
In 1995, he co-established OmniVision Technology in Silicon Valley. OmniVision developed the first single-chip colored CMOS imaging sensor in the world and triggered a new round of technical development and industrial innovation. The company was listed on the NASDAQ in 2000.
In 2001, Chen jointly established Spreadtrum Communications in Shanghai, and served as the CTO. The company developed the first TD-SCDMA (3G) cell phone core chip and was awarded first prize in the National Progress in Science and Technology competition in 2006. It was listed on the NASDAQ in 2007.
Since 2005, Chen Datong has been an investment partner at Northern Light Venture Capital and led investments in China's new and high-tech companies.
In January 2010, he co-founded OmniVision, expanding the company's investments to new and high-tech companies around the world.
Chen Datong has 34 patents in the United States and Europe. He also serves as director of the China Semiconductor Industry Association and is a member of the Expert Group of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
