Shanghai prepares for global health conference

Li Bin, minister of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, hosted the first session of the steering committee of the global health conference on Oct 17, 2015. Officials from local and international health bodies attended the session and reported on preparations for the meeting. Shanghai Mayor Yang Xiong and Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization, delivered speeches.

Li said that the conference will review health developments over the past 30 years and initiate implementation of the UN sustainable development goals and improvements in Chinese health for the 2016-2020 period. Li asked relevant personnel to learn about international health promotion at the meeting and share China's experiences with the world.

Yang said that, by letting Shanghai host the meeting, the NHFPC and the WHO not only showed their trust in the municipality but also offered it a great opportunity to learn from international experience, which will definitely play a positive role in developing a healthy Shanghai. Yang said Shanghai would do its best to ensure the meeting is a success.

Margaret Chan pointed out that the event next year will mark its 30th anniversary and the first year since the UN General Assembly approved the Post-2015 UN Development Agenda. She believew that China is capable of making the meeting a success. The WHO has been devoted to promoting healthy city development, and the healthy city mayor forum will boost exchanges among global cities.

Ma Xiaowei and Cui Li, vice ministers of the NHFPC, Weng Tiehui, vice mayor of Shanghai and other officials attended the meeting.

The conference was initiated by the WHO and the top official meeting to promote health. It aimed to boost public health and health equality in all countries. The meeting is held every three to four years and the upcoming session will be held in Shanghai from Nov 21-24, 2016.
