China's applications for trademarks top the world

Up to December 9, 2010, applications for trademark registrations in China had reached 8,213,000, among which 5,545,000 filings had been registered. Valid registrations amounted to 4,481,200, ranking first in the world.

1 million

By November 18, 2010, 1 million patent applications had been submitted to the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), with 70 thousand applications granted. The applications in 2010 doubled those in 2005, and successful registrations grew even faster.

794 million

Between 2007 and 2009, the Chinese government spent 794 million Yuan in purchasing legitimate software. The procurement of genuine operating system software products increases by a large scale every year.

1,012

By the end of 2010, China had approved 1,012 applications for geographical indications (GIs), among which 37 were from foreign applicants.

The statistics, jointly issued by the State Intellectual Property Office and the National Bureau of Statistics, show that among 429 thousand scale enterprises, 25,375 filed patent applications in 2009, up 41.7% over the previous year; 18,951 obtained authorization, up 42.7%; 30,903 owned valid patents, occupying 7.2% of the total.
