Fakes 'ruining' art market

A series of forums on intellectual property in calligraphy and painting highlighted Art Week that began at the Beijing World Art Museum on Nov 19. "Without intellectual property protection, there is no guarantee of the authenticity of traded art works," said Lin Li, general manager of consultancy firm Blue Numen, one of the organizers of the event. Forum participants said fakes damage the interests of both buyers and artists and are ruining the art market. Lin called for "systemic art IP protection" to ensure the rights of creators, collectors and art institutions.

A national design patent information center was officially unveiled in Wuxi in early November that is expected to help companies improve their capacity in industrial design and proprietary innovation, said He Quan, vice-governor of the province, at the event's opening ceremony. Design Patent Contest winners

The list of winners in the China Design Patent Contest will be announced in Nanjing, the main venue for this year's Patent Week, on Nov 29, the first day of the nationwide initiative. Organizers said by mid-October they received more than 600 entries ranging from construction machines to home appliances. The annual contest has a far-reaching influence on industry as it aims to inspire designers' interest in creation and improve the quality of their designs, organizers said.

Police raid gaming operation

Ma'anshan police with support from security officials in Jiangsu, Hunan, Tianjin and Guangdong have cracked down on a large online game infringement operation during a special action on Internet crime. Police said they seized 45 private servers, shut down 3,000 illegal online game portals and a payment platform. They also recovered about 800,000 yuan ($128,000) in illicit proceeds as the result of a three-month-long, multi-regional operation. Twelve suspects have been arrested.

Innovative digital pen

A digital pen designed for Microsoft's new Windows 8 software was unveiled at this year's China High-Tech Fair. Its designer Shenzhen Yifang Digital said the pen produced with the company's exclusive patents and tracing technologies allows users to turn a normal PC monitor into a touch screen.
