Copyrights issued for Natl Games
Copyrights on 41 items related to the 12th National Games, which will be held in the provincial capital Shenyang at the end of this month, were recently registered with the provincial copyright administration. They include the emblem, the mascot, the theme song as well as slogans and posters. The organizing committee has attached great importance to protecting these assets of the sporting event by reaching a consensus with the office on the issue at the beginning of this year.

Patent courses planned
The city's intellectual property office recently agreed to cooperate with Tsinghua University and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences to increase the number of professional patent agents nationwide. Two related courses, patent information utilization and patent agency practices, will be provided to graduate students during the upcoming semesters at the two universities. Other students can also be enrolled in these two courses.

New policies released
Some members of the Shanghai Joint Conference of Intellectual Property launched new policies in the first half of this year to promote the creation, protection and use of IP. One of them, issued by the local educational committee, encourages colleges to increase investment in the commercialization of patents. The industry and commerce administration unveiled regulations calling for strengthened management of famous trademarks, including online monitoring. The copyright and finance authorities jointly launched a fund to award locals that registered software copyrights.

Review mechanism set to launch
The provincial intellectual property office will launch a patent review mechanism for major economic events at the end of this year. Director of the office, Chen Zhongbo, said a complete document has been formed with a powerful operability and practicability. But the office will not set the mechanism as a pre-examination, which means it is not a compulsory regulation for the companies, according to Chen.

China gaining in filings ranking
China could replace Germany as the nation with the third-largest number of patent filings, said Mao Jinsheng, director of the IP Development and Research Center of the State Intellectual Property Office, at a recent conference about alternative energy industry in Hangzhou city. Experts said China is a leading nation in terms of patent application for alternative energy technologies, but not a "strong nation", noting that Chinese companies lack the awareness and ability to use patents to expand on the international market.

Dongguan hosts animation IP fest
The fifth China International Animation Copyright Fair kicked off last week in Dongguan city. The event, lasting from Aug 22 to 26, covered an area of 50,000 square meters and attracted more than 400 exhibitors from China as well as 15 countries and regions overseas. It was made up of 20 activities with themes that included brand authorization, distribution channels, and animation and game development. The fair is the first of its kind in China highlighting copyright protection and trade.
