The State Intellectual Property Office recently signed an agreement with People's Insurance Company of China to develop innovative insurance products, establish services, exchange information and conduct surveys to improve the business model for IP insurance.

Genetic forest resources

The State Forestry Administration has released a national plan and solicited public opinion on protection and sustainable use of genetic forest resources. The plan calls for China to be a powerhouse in tree genetics by 2025 with a well-established legal framework, effective management and a sound evaluation system. The administration said it will enhance research into preservation, continue investigation of tree genetics and improve monitoring techniques.

Games from Internet literature

The first auction in China for rights to adapt Internet literature into games will be held by Cloudary Co during the China Joy 2014 digital entertainment expo from July 31 to Aug 3. The event will be open to all literature suitable for game adaptation. Six or seven works will be auctioned, said a Cloudary spokesperson.

Prison for fake snacks

Members of a family in Huaiying county were recently sentenced to imprisonment for making counterfeits and fined 16,000 yuan ($2,582). Police said Zhou Baolian, her son and her daughter bought lesserknown snacks in the provincial capital Zhengzhou, then hired workers to put them in faked packages with the name Hot-Kid Baby Melt, a famous Taiwan brand. Authorities said they found counterfeits worth 120,000 yuan in potential retail value during a raid on the family's production site.

Invention tests pipe fittings

Zhejiang Huayuan Electronics Technology Co has applied for an invention patent for its proprietary automatic equipment to test pipe fittings. It can work around the clock with a single worker now able to operate six units.

Cross-Straits trademark seminar

Nearly 200 experts, company representatives and industry insiders attended a cross-Straits trademark seminar in Hohhot in mid-July. The forum discussed trademark issues ranging from infringement and compensation for damages to development of proprietary brands. Taiwan applicants registered more than 104,000 trademarks on the Chinese mainland by the end of 2013, nearly 10,550 of them last year alone.

Thomson Reuters IP system

Business information company Thomson Reuters announced at a recent IP summit in Nanjing that it will introduce its "Thomson IP Manager" to China, a system that has helped manage corporate IP assets in Western companies for 50 years. Industry insiders said the initiative shows that international giants have now started expanding into Chinese IP information services.
