During an ongoing innovation competition for start-ups, hosted by the Ministry of Science and Technology, an intellectual property service portal, Easy-IP, provided contestants with one-stop IP services to help maximize their innovation value. The annual competition, which started in June, drew more than 8,700 companies and 3,700 teams nationwide from sectors including IT, bio-medicines, new materials, renewable energy and mobile Internet.

Integrated IP office
An intellectual property office will be founded in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone to integrate IP-related functions currently undertaken by various government organizations, said local officials at a forum last week. The zone will attempt to build a unified IP management and enforcement system and a mechanism to solve IP disputes through multiple approaches including arbitration and conciliation. An IP court division will also be established.

Chinese Viagra to hit market
Guangzhou Baiyunshan Pharmaceutical Holdings Co announced that it would launch Jinge, the Chinese version of Viagra, by the end of October. Baiyunshan is the nation's first company to receive approval from the China Food and Drug Administration to make sildenafil citrate, a generic erectile dysfunction medicine, after US based Pfizer Inc's patent for the medicine, under the brand name Viagra, expired in China in May.

Biogas power plant
The province's first biogas power plant was unveiled at a modern agricultural park in Hezheng county and its related technologies were granted patents. The park uses corn straws to feed cattle and collects their excreta for biogas power generation. Solar-powered heater and waste heat collected from power generating facilities helps advance fermentation during winter. Leftover waste is processed into organic fertilizer for corn and vegetables in the park.

Copyright event ends
The fifth China International Copyright Expo ended on Sept 19 in Chengdu and resulted in 17 contracts worth more than 2 billion yuan ($325.8 million). The five-day event drew exhibitors from some 20 countries and regions to showcase their products including books, films and electronics to trade at the expo. One of the highlights of the event was the establishment of a copyright exchange mechanism focusing on the areas of digital products, arts and designed products.

Protection partnership
The provincial intellectual property office and IP aid center signed an IP enforcement and protection cooperative agreement with Suning Easygo, an online shopping portal for electronic appliances, to strengthen IP protection in the e-commerce area last week. Both parties plan to set up a special team responsible for the guidance and assistance needed by the company, and also widen cooperation in patent information utilization and big data mining.

Patent enforcement at expo
During the 11th China-ASEAN Expo, from Sept 16 to 19, the intellectual property administrations of the autonomous region and Nanning city handled three patent disputes and investigated nine patent infringement cases. Three enforcement teams were sent to the expo venues to conduct daily inspection tours. Goods found infringing patents were removed immediately. Volunteers were also organized for IP promotion campaigns.
