Sino-UK copyright meeting held

The Chinese and UK copyright authorities held a meeting last week discussing issues including copyright collective management, resale rights, broadcasting rights and orphan works, which are copyright protected works whose right owners are indeterminate. A seminar was held on the same day attracting government officials and executives from copyright agencies and industry associations from the two countries. The National Copyright Administration of China and the UK Intellectual Property Office signed a partnership agreement in 2010.

Fake earphone seller caught by police

A man in Shaoguan was arrested for selling counterfeit earphones that involved potential retail value of more than 30 million yuan ($4.7 million). When local industry and commerce authorities raided an illegal factory making earphones in late January, they found 50,000 had fake Nike, Adidas, Skullcandy and Samsung trademarks. In July, police caught the factory owner, who said he purchased the counterfeit products online in September 2014.

60 people trained in software protection

The provincial General Chamber of Commerce held a training program about software copyright protection, aiming to promote genuine software in privately owned companies. The program attracted more than 60 trainees from the province's chambers of commerce and companies. Li Fang, vice-president of the General Chamber of Commerce, said the private sector should take social responsibility for promoting genuine software.

High-speed railway tracks installed

The first 500-meter track for the Zhengzhou-Xuzhou high-speed railway was laid in Xuzhou on Sunday morning, marking the start of the track-laying process of China's first high-speed railway that uses home-developed CRTS III ballastless tracks, which allow trains to go at speeds of 350 km per hour. The Zhengzhou-Xuzhou high-speed railway covers a distance of 361.9 km and has nine stations. The project was launched in 2012 and is scheduled to be completed by 2016.

China, Arab states partner for book site

China and Arab states have taken a new approach to book copyright trade and information exchanges, with the China-Arab Book Rights Network website, which launched in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region. Established by a local company, the Yellow River Publishing and Media Group, the website provides services such as book promotions, online book exhibitions and successful case analysis. All information is published in Chinese, English and Arabic.

Online counterfeit campaign starts

On Sept 1, the province started a three-month campaign to fight against online counterfeit goods and trademark violations, according to the provincial administration for industry and commerce. The campaign will focus mostly on consumer products, such as electronic products, auto parts, clothes and agricultural materials. The administration is also promoting the application of electronic identification by online store owners to help regulate the local e-commerce business environment.

Students get coupons for patent applications

The city of Xiangtan issued more than 300,000 yuan ($47,100) in patent coupons to help students at local universities and vocational colleges apply for patents. The coupons, which have three face values of 500 yuan, 1,000 yuan and 2,000 yuan, can be used in local patent agencies, according to the city's intellectual property office. The city government will select some universities and vocational colleges as pilots to train IP-related personnel.
