Trademark campaign ahead of Disneyland opening

The State Administration for Industry and Commerce launched a yearlong campaign last week to protect Disney's trademarks as Shanghai Disneyland is scheduled to open next spring. Major protection areas include the park and surrounding resorts. Authorities in East China will cooperate on operations against illegal use of the trademarks and the production and sales of unlicensed Disney-related products, including those distributed on the Internet.

Xinhua files patents for robot news writing system

A research team from Xinhua News Agency filed two patent applications for its Kuaibi Xiaoxin news writing robot system, which was launched last week to write sports and business news. The system can write in Chinese and English and was tested for months. A news brief that takes a reporter about 10 minutes to write can be done by the robot in only seconds. Developers said the system collects and processes data automatically, and writes according to different formats.

IP court heard almost 8,000 cases in past 12 months

The Beijing Intellectual Property Court accepted 7,918 cases in the past 12 months, and concluded more than 3,200, said Su Chi, head of the court, at a forum held in Beijing on Saturday. About 75 percent of the cases were patent administrative lawsuits and nearly 40 percent involved overseas companies or individuals. Su said that the court, which was founded on Nov 6, 2014, has improved legal procedures to protect IP rights.

Raid nets thousands of fake Nike, Adidas sports shoes

The Yiwu market supervision administration recently raided a building storing counterfeit sports shoes. Law enforcement officers found 1,200 pairs of fake Nike shoes and 1,480 pairs labeled as Adidas. The owner of the illegal goods said they were about to be sent to Iran.

Companies granted pledge loans totaling $8.95m at fair

Four small companies in Shaanxi province were granted IP pledge loans to a total value of 57 million yuan ($8.95 million) at a matchmaking fair last week in Xi'an for Shaanxi companies and IP financing institutions. The event was aimed to promote cooperation between local medium-and small-sized companies and financial institutions. It attracted delegates from more than 100 companies, universities, banks and IP agencies.

Exhibition features culture of Belt and Road regions

A Belt and Road intangible cultural heritage exhibition was recently held in Xiamen. The three-day event featured traditional performing arts, workmanship and artifacts from regions that are integrating into the initiatives of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, including Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. Thirteen performance teams and 34 representative inheritors participated in the event.

Sichuan signs agreement for closer cooperation

The intellectual property association of Sichuan province signed a cooperation agreement, which calls for closer bilateral IP exchanges, with the Taiwan federation of industries during the weeklong visit of a Sichuan IP delegation to Taiwan. The federation offered a training program that covers brand building, IP industrialization and corporate patent management. The delegation also visited Taiwan's IP authority, universities and companies, and talked with local IP officials, lawyers, scholars and engineers.
